Odontolabis mouhotii elegans
A stag beetle whose males do not merely vary in size: they develop into sharply different weapon-bearing forms.
About this species
Odontolabis mouhotii elegansMöllenkamp, 1901
Odontolabis mouhotii elegans is a Southeast Asian subspecies of stag beetle. Males show extreme allometry, with mandibles changing disproportionately as body size increases and producing recognisably different weapon forms.

Mainland Southeast Asia, especially Thailand and neighbouring Myanmar
Tropical and subtropical forest where larvae develop in decayed wood and adults visit sap flows or ripe fruit.
Adults are mostly active around humid forest and feeding sites; males compete for access to females.
Adults take fermenting sap and fruit juices; larvae consume decomposing wood with associated microbes.
Solitary, though adults may aggregate at sap flows.
Male development produces discrete-looking weapon morphs: smaller males carry short cutting mandibles, while the largest develop long, branched “telodont” jaws used to grapple with rivals.
The switch is strongly nonlinear — a modest increase in body size can trigger a dramatic jump in mandible length and shape rather than simple proportional growth.
Despite carrying enormous jaws, adults do not chew solid wood: they use brush-like mouthparts to drink sap and fruit liquid, while the wood-digesting stage is the buried larva.
