Hipparidium heros
A giant Sulawesi tiger beetle whose species identity is encoded in structures only a millimetre across.
About this species
Hipparidium heros(Fabricius, 1801)
Hipparidium heros is a large tiger beetle from Sulawesi. Adults are powerful ground predators, and modern work compares the minute male genital structures to separate it from newly discovered relatives on the same island.

At roughly 21 millimetres it is a giant among many tiger beetles, combining an enlarged head, huge eyes and sickle-like mandibles into a predator that can overpower substantial arthropod prey.
Sulawesi has generated several extremely similar Hipparidium species; researchers distinguish them by comparing the shape of the male aedeagus at a scale of about one millimetre.
A documented specimen from North Sulawesi’s Boyong Atas preserves an exact modern locality for a species named in 1801, connecting Fabricius-era taxonomy to a living island population more than two centuries later.
