Dromica marginella
A flightless South African tiger beetle outlined by a pale border around each wing case.
About this species
Dromica marginella(Boheman, 1848)
Dromica marginella is a South African ground-running tiger beetle. Its dark wing cases are traced by a narrow pale margin, while the flightless body plan means every chase, escape and dispersal movement must be completed on foot.

Accepted species according to current global catalogues; not to be confused with the later synonym “marginella Péringuey, 1893” associated with Dromica albicinctella. · checked 2026-07-15
Open ground in southern African landscapes.
Diurnal ground-running predator.
Predatory on small arthropods.
A narrow pale line follows the outer edge of each wing case, creating a complete visual frame around the dark back.
The beetle is flightless, so the same long-legged running system must handle prey capture, escape, mate searching and movement between habitat patches.
Museum series place the species in South Africa, where isolated populations cannot simply cross unsuitable ground by opening their wings.
