Dromica (Dromica) alboclavata
A flightless tiger beetle that replaces the usual escape flight with explosive running across dry savanna.
About this species
Dromica (Dromica) alboclavataDokhtouroff, 1883
Dromica alboclavata is a South African tiger beetle of sandy, open savanna. The adult is a fast ground predator, and its inability to fly helps isolate local populations across a patchy dry-season landscape.

Dry savanna and open sandy ground.
Diurnal ground-running predator, most visible during favourable warm and moist seasonal conditions.
Predatory on small arthropods.
Solitary.
The pale marginal stripe runs almost continuously around each wing cover, producing the white-edged pattern behind the name alboclavata.
The adult is flightless: both hunting and escape depend on sprinting rather than the short emergency flights used by many tiger beetles.
Short seasonal activity and flightlessness can isolate neighbouring populations, helping the Dromica lineage diversify across southern African drylands.
