Cryptalaus sordidus
A leopard-patterned click beetle that can catapult itself into the air without using its legs.
About this species
Cryptalaus sordidus(Westwood, 1848)
Cryptalaus sordidus is an Oriental click beetle covered in irregular yellow and black scales. Beneath that camouflage lies a spring-loaded thoracic mechanism capable of launching the beetle from its back.

A spine on the underside of the first thoracic segment snaps into a matching cavity, releasing stored strain as an audible click and sudden jump.
The leap is powered by the thorax rather than the legs, so the beetle can right itself even when every foot is pointing away from the ground.
Dense yellow and black scales create a leopard-like pattern that disrupts the outline against bark and can be rubbed away to reveal darker cuticle beneath.
