Irregular cream markings break across the darker elytra, creating disruptive camouflage against mixed grains, glare and shadow on sand.
The eyes project beyond the sides of the head, allowing the beetle to monitor prey and danger across an exceptionally wide field while running.
Its larva abandons pursuit completely and waits inside a vertical sand burrow, using the head and thorax as a plug before exploding upward at prey.
