The elytra are fused and the flight wings reduced, creating a stronger defensive shell at the irreversible cost of powered flight.
When threatened it can release an acrid defensive secretion from the rear of the abdomen, combining armour with chemical deterrence.
The violet or electric-blue border is concentrated along the edges of an otherwise dark body, becoming suddenly vivid when light strikes from the side.
