What makes this species remarkable?
Its cold-adapted larvae can continue hunting during winter when many other predatory insects are dormant.
Molecular and feeding studies show the larvae consume soft-bodied prey including worms and insect larvae beneath the soil surface.
The adult moves the hunt into vegetation, taking small insects on flowers while also feeding on pollen and nectar.
