One-to-one online macro photography lessons

Get the right help for your macro photography. Three ways to start — depending on how clearly you already understand the problem.

Book a lesson directly, take the Macro Photography Skills Assessment, or send me one photograph for a complimentary personal image diagnostic.

Whichever route you choose, the aim is the same: identify the most useful next step, work on your own photography and avoid paying for teaching you do not need.

Three ways to start

Choose the starting point that fits what you already know.

You do not have to take an assessment before booking, and you do not have to know the technical name of the problem before asking for help. Start with whichever route makes the most sense to you.

01 Direct

I already know what I need

If the problem is clear — lighting, stacking, specimen preparation, editing, field technique or another defined area — go straight to the booking form.

Best for photographers who can already describe the skill or workflow problem they want the session to address.
02 Diagnostic

I’m not sure what I should work on

Take the 30-question Macro Photography Skills Assessment. It compares your goals and workflow with applied technical questions and builds an education-first result.

You receive strengths, a primary learning priority, something practical to try yourself and, where appropriate, the smallest sensible lesson pathway.
03 Complimentary

I want you to look at one of my images

Send me one macro photograph for a personal image diagnostic. I’ll identify the most useful thing I would work on first and give you one practical next step.

Ten complimentary review places are available each week. Each photographer can use one complimentary image review every 30 days.
Assessment route

Not sure what is holding you back? Diagnose it before you book.

The assessment uses 26 core questions followed by four questions selected from your earlier answers. It looks at your goals and workflow, but your demonstrated technical decisions carry the weight — not how confident you say you feel.

There is no pass or fail. You may be given a focused learning priority, a connected lesson pathway, or told that no essential structured lesson is indicated for the evidence you provided.

Your result is designed to teach you something.

  • Your Macro Photography Profile and stage
  • Your strongest demonstrated areas
  • The first learning or refinement priority I would address
  • Why that issue matters photographically
  • A practical experiment you can try yourself
  • Where appropriate, the smallest sensible lesson pathway
PERSONAL MACRO IMAGE DIAGNOSTIC

Want me to look at one of your photographs?

Send me one macro photograph. I’ll personally identify the most useful thing to work on next, explain why it matters, give you one practical thing to try, and tell you honestly whether a lesson would help.

10/10 complimentary image-review places available this weekIf you’d like me to look at one of your photographs, you’re welcome to send one. Each photographer can use this complimentary review once every 30 days.

If teaching is the right next step

One focused session, two connected sessions, or a guided four-session programme.

Whether you arrive through the assessment, an image diagnostic or direct booking, the principle is the same: use the smallest amount of teaching that makes educational sense for the result you want.

Focused 90-minute session

£150

Best when one clearly defined issue is holding you back and the supporting skills are already reasonably secure.

  • Live one-to-one online teaching
  • Your images, equipment and problem
  • One focused development area

Two 90-minute sessions

£285

Best when two skills are connected, or when the problem you want to solve depends on one earlier skill being addressed first.

  • Two private 90-minute sessions
  • Suggested 7–14 days of practice between sessions
  • Second session can use the work you create after the first

Personal Macro Development Programme

£500

Four connected sessions for photographers whose goal requires improvement across several stages of the same workflow.

  • 4 × private 90-minute sessions
  • Personal learning sequence
  • Practice and new work between sessions
  • Later sessions refine the problems that appear in your own workflow
The curriculum behind the assessment

A complete macro workflow, taught only where you need it.

The diagnostic is mapped to a structured curriculum rather than a loose list of lesson topics. You may need one area, several connected areas, or a longer development pathway.

Stage 1 · Foundations

Build reliable technical control

Magnification, working distance, depth of field, exposure, focus, sharpness and making sensible equipment choices around the subjects you actually want to photograph.

Macro Photography Foundations
Stage 2 · Field macro

Find, approach, light and photograph live subjects

Move beyond chance encounters. Learn fieldcraft, habitat and behaviour, field lighting, focus placement, working distance, composition and live-subject technique.

Finding & Approaching Insects Field Lighting & Flash Field Macro Technique
Stage 3 · Focus stacking core

Understand and control the stack before software has to rescue it

Focus-plane coverage, step size, rails and physical setup, repeatable lighting, reflections, white balance and deliberate black, grey, white or coloured backgrounds.

Understanding Focus Stacking Gear & Setup Stacking Lighting Backgrounds & Presentation
Stage 4 · Subject specialisation

Live subjects and prepared specimens require different skills

Live insects are approached through behaviour, temporary environment and welfare. Preserved specimens require inspection, cleaning, relaxing, positioning, pinning and mounting. These are alternatives, not compulsory consecutive lessons.

Live Insects in the Studio Specimen Preparation for Focus Stacking
Stage 5 · Digital workflow

Diagnose, repair and finish the image

Learn to distinguish capture problems from rendering problems, work with source frames, deal with halos and difficult edge interactions, then take the completed image through colour, cleanup, background refinement, sharpening and output.

Building & Troubleshooting the Stack Editing & Finishing the Macro Image
How the learning works

Teaching, practice, then refinement.

The starting route can be different, but the teaching principle is the same: identify the problem, work on your own photography, practise, then refine.

01

Choose the right starting point

Book directly if the problem is already clear, use the assessment if it is not, or send one photograph if you want me to look at the evidence itself. The objective is to understand what will make the greatest difference before teaching begins.

02

Work on your actual photography

The session is live and one-to-one. We can discuss your equipment, review your images, examine failed attempts and work through the decisions relevant to your own subjects.

03

Practise before the next step

With two or four sessions, you apply the first lesson, make new work and return with real results. The next session can then refine what actually happened rather than simply adding more theory.

Your tutor

Macro photography taught by a photographer and an educator.

I am Eduard Florin Niga, author and photographer of Ants: Workers of the World. My specialist macro work has developed through more than a decade of photographing insects at extreme scale, while my teaching background spans 15 years.

The purpose of these sessions is not to make your photography look like mine. It is to help you understand why your own workflow behaves the way it does, make better decisions and become less dependent on trial and error.

Questions before booking

A few practical details.

Do I have to take the assessment?

No. If you already know exactly what you want to work on, book directly. The assessment is for photographers who want help identifying the most useful starting point.

What is the Personal Macro Image Diagnostic?

You send one macro photograph and I review it personally. I identify what is working, the first issue I would address, why it matters and one practical thing to try. If a lesson would genuinely help, I can recommend the most relevant one.

How often can I request a complimentary image review?

Each photographer can use one complimentary image review every 30 days. There are 10 complimentary review places available each week, and the live availability is shown on the page.

What happens to the image I upload?

Your image remains your property. It is used only to provide the requested review and is not published, shared, licensed, advertised or used as teaching material without separate permission. The stored image file is scheduled for deletion 30 days after the review is sent.

How long is each lesson?

Each private session is 90 minutes. The two-session and four-session options are separate 90-minute appointments rather than one long block.

How are the lessons delivered?

The lessons are live and online through Microsoft Teams, allowing us to discuss images, equipment, workflow and technical problems in real time.

When do I pay?

Request your preferred time first. Payment is requested only after the appointment has been reviewed and approved.

Why are multi-session lessons spaced apart?

The gap is intentional. You need time to apply the first session, make new photographs or stacks and discover what happens in your own workflow before we move to the next stage.

Can the lesson use my own images and equipment?

Yes. That is one of the main advantages of one-to-one teaching. Your current photographs, setup, subjects and technical problems can form the basis of the session.

Can two photographers in the same household each use the image diagnostic?

Yes. The limit applies to each photographer, not to a household or internet connection. Each person can use one complimentary image review every 30 days, subject to the weekly availability.

Start with what you already know about the problem.

If the lesson you need is clear, book it. If you are unsure where the gap is, take the assessment. If you would rather start with an actual photograph, send me one for a personal image diagnostic.
