Arrive in Antananarivo on 2 May. Your Relais des Plateaux arrival night is included before the seven field days, followed by a second Relais night after returning on 9 May.
Six photographers. Serious field time.
Specialist macro and wildlife photography in the Andasibe rainforests, personally led by Eduard Niga with experienced Malagasy wildlife guides, day and night fieldwork and one high-forest camping night.
Choose the year you want to travel.
The same specialist small-group format, with only two departures each year.

Six is not an arbitrary number.
Macro photography becomes difficult when too many people are trying to work around the same small subject. Keeping the group to six protects both photographic access and the amount of individual help Eduard can give.
This is not a race to accumulate sightings. When a subject is productive, the aim is to make photographs: solve the light, refine the angle, control the background, work through focus and magnification, and leave only when the opportunity has genuinely run its course.
Local Malagasy wildlife guides provide the indispensable knowledge of trails, wildlife, behaviour and changing conditions. Eduard concentrates on what happens once the subject is found: the photograph itself.
Look closely first.
The expedition is built around the subjects that are easiest to overlook: insects, spiders, camouflage, texture and the small-scale behaviour hidden in the rainforest.
The point is not to photograph more subjects. It is to make more of the subjects we find.
The same patience works at a larger scale.
Reptiles and amphibians fit naturally into the expedition because they reward exactly the same habits: reading the background, watching the light and taking time before pressing the shutter.
Bring a telephoto lens as well as your macro equipment. The best day in the forest does not necessarily stay at one magnification.
Then look up.
Lemurs are part of what makes Andasibe extraordinary. When the forest gives us the opportunity, the expedition makes room for them too.
A sifaka encounter changes the scale of the day completely. The expedition is flexible enough to make something of those opportunities rather than treating them as a distraction from macro work.
Indri bring something photography alone cannot quite convey: their calls through the forest are part of the experience of being in Andasibe, and the chance to photograph them belongs naturally within the wider story of the expedition.
The trip through their eyes.
Roy and Jack came to the forest with different photographic obsessions. That is exactly how these expeditions should work: the same rainforest, but different subjects pulling each photographer deeper into it.
“Madagascar is unlike anywhere else — the forests, the wildlife, the night walks, the sense of discovery.”
“A week that pushes you, inspires you, and stays with you. It’s an experience you don’t forget.”
The field itinerary.
Both years use the same core expedition structure. Wildlife, weather, park access, trail conditions and local-guide advice can require sensible changes in the field.

Every overnight serves a purpose.
The package starts and finishes comfortably in Antananarivo, keeps the group close to the Andasibe forest for the main field days, and includes one supported night higher in the forest.
Relais des Plateaux
Each participant has a private room on the arrival night and again after the expedition returns to Antananarivo. Dinner and breakfast are included at both ends, with the hotel airport shuttle used where required.
Feon’ ny Ala
The established rainforest-edge base for the small-group expedition. The group product currently uses twin occupancy at Feon’ ny Ala, keeping the field package efficient and close to the forest.
High forest above Ambalahorina
The overnight camp is reached from Ambalahorina by a steady ascent of around two hours, with camping equipment, food, water, local carrying support and the illuminated moth-sheet setup included.
Know what the expedition asks of you.
This is real rainforest fieldwork. You do not need expedition-athlete fitness, but you should be comfortable with uneven trails, humidity, night sessions and the included high-forest ascent.
Uneven, muddy or slippery trails are possible, with roots, steps and inclines.
You should be comfortable walking after dark with a headtorch and photographic equipment.
The camping day includes a steady ascent of around two hours.
Wildlife activity can create early starts, late finishes and substantial time outdoors.
One night is spent in a supported tented camp rather than a hotel room.
Speak to Eduard before booking if you are uncertain about suitability.

Photograph Madagascar with Eduard Niga.
Eduard is a professional macro photographer, educator and the photographer and author of Ants: Workers of the World, published by Abrams, New York.
The expedition combines his specialist photographic experience with the indispensable field knowledge of Malagasy wildlife guides. Once a subject is found, the practical work continues: lighting, diffusion, magnification, working distance, focus, composition, backgrounds and the decision to stay with a subject rather than rush on.
The photograph never outranks the animal.
Wildlife is photographed in situ wherever possible. Participants do not independently handle, move or reposition animals.
We work under the guidance of experienced local wildlife guides. Any handling or repositioning considered appropriate by a guide takes place only under that guide’s direction. Animal welfare and local field judgement come before obtaining a photograph.
Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed and the programme can change with weather, access, trail conditions, wildlife activity and guide advice.
