Earwig collection

Earwigs Order Dermaptera

Distinctive insects defined by powerful forceps, folded wings and unexpectedly complex behaviour.

Earwigs are instantly recognisable by the curved cerci at the tip of the abdomen. This collection reveals their segmented bodies, intricate mouthparts, textured exoskeletons and remarkable anatomical detail through high-resolution macro photography.

A closer look at Dermaptera

More complex than their reputation.

Earwigs combine compact armour, hidden wings and some of the most distinctive appendages in the insect world.

Their abdominal forceps are used for defence, courtship, handling prey and folding the delicate hindwings beneath the short forewings.

Although many species are nocturnal and secretive, they occupy a wide range of habitats, from leaf litter and bark to flowers, caves and tropical forests.

Some species also show unusually advanced parental care, with females guarding eggs and tending young nymphs during their earliest stages.
