Ants Family Formicidae
170 species photographed over a decade across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
From tiny woodland ants to giant tropical species, this collection reveals one of Earth’s most successful animal groups through high-resolution macro photography.
Portraits from a decade-long photographic study of ant diversity.
A decade spent looking closer.
The entire project began with one simple question from my daughter: “Where are the ants’ eyes, Daddy?”
That question changed the way I looked at ants. What began as curiosity grew into a long-term photographic study of their faces, anatomy, behaviour and extraordinary diversity.
Over more than ten years, I have photographed species from British woodlands, Mediterranean habitats, museum collections and tropical rainforests, including fieldwork in Madagascar.
Each finished portrait is assembled from many individual photographs, combined through focus stacking to reveal eyes, hairs, jaws, textures and structures that would otherwise remain invisible.
